The International Baccalaureate is widely regarded as one of the most rigorous and holistic education frameworks available globally. In the UAE, a growing number of schools offer IB programmes, attracting families who value a globally minded, inquiry-based approach to learning.
What Is the IB?
The IBO was founded in Geneva in 1968. It offers programmes in over 5,700 schools across 150+ countries. Three programmes are commonly found in the UAE: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP).
The Three IB Programmes
| Programme | Ages | Duration | Focus |
|---|
| PYP | 3 – 12 | 6 years | Inquiry-based, transdisciplinary learning across six themes |
| MYP | 11 – 16 | 5 years | Eight subject groups, personal project, community service |
| Diploma (DP) | 16 – 19 | 2 years | Six subjects (3 HL, 3 SL) + TOK, Extended Essay, CAS |
The IB Diploma Programme
Students choose six subjects: three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL), drawn from six subject groups. They must also complete three core components:
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK): An epistemological course reflecting on the nature of knowledge.
- Extended Essay (EE): An independent 4,000-word research paper on a topic of the student’s choice.
- Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): Ongoing engagement in creative, physical, and service activities.
The Diploma is scored out of 45 points maximum: up to 7 per subject (42 max) plus 3 bonus points from TOK and EE. A score of 24 is needed to pass; scores above 40 are considered exceptional.
Why Families Choose the IB
- Global recognition: Accepted by universities in virtually every country. Highly regarded by competitive admissions teams.
- Holistic development: Develops critical thinking, research skills, and intercultural awareness beyond academics.
- Depth and breadth: Six subjects across groups ensures breadth; Higher Level (HL) provides depth.
- Inquiry-based learning: Students develop independence, questioning skills, and intellectual ownership.
Fee Ranges
| Category | Annual Fees (AED) | Typical Profile |
|---|
| Mid-Range | 40,000 – 70,000 | Established IB World Schools, Good to Very Good |
| Premium | 70,000 – 120,000+ | Outstanding, full PYP-MYP-DP continuum |
IB Curriculum Adaptations in the UAE
- Arabic language is compulsory, typically offered through separate pathways for native and non-native speakers.
- Islamic Education is mandatory for Muslim students, while non-Muslim students usually follow Moral Education.
- UAE Social Studies is required alongside IB programmes to meet national education requirements.
- School inspections are conducted by KHDA (Dubai) or ADEK (Abu Dhabi) under the UAE Unified Inspection Framework, in parallel with IB standards.
- IB authorisation status is critical: only authorised IB World Schools may deliver assessments and award official IB grades.
How to Choose the Right IB School in the UAE
- IB authorisation: Verify the school is an authorised IB World School, not only a candidate.
- Programme continuum: Schools offering PYP, MYP, and DP provide stronger curricular alignment and continuity.
- IB results: Ask for average Diploma scores, pass rates, and performance consistency over time.
- University counselling: Strong guidance is essential for global university applications and competitive admissions.
- Teacher experience: IB assessment expertise and moderation experience directly impact student outcomes.
Important: Verify IB Authorisation
Not every school claiming to offer the IB is an authorised IB World School. Parents should verify authorisation directly on the IBO website (ibo.org). Some schools are in the “candidate” phase, meaning they are working towards authorisation but cannot yet officially deliver the programme or award IB grades.
